Help... svg not showing in scal

Post by gingrkitti »

Ok heres my problem.... everything I am doing in inkscape is coming out as just a box in SCAl... its driving me nuts. I tried a jpg first and nada... so then I tried text I typed right in inkscape, once again nothing. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you fix it? I know its something I am doing wrong.... just what is it?

Are you converting the text and images to path? For the text, select the text, then from the menu, Path/object to path. For images, select one image, Path/trace bitmap, a dialog box appears to the right, click update. If the preview looks ok, click ok. If it doesn't look ok you can try changing the settings.

I know this is simple, but is your image/text within the "bounding box"? If any part is outside of it, it can cause problems (at least to my knowledge)

How do you select one image? I have 2 downloads that contain a lot of different files. When I try to select it only selects the whole bunch of them. How do I select just one?

Thanks,
Susan

Is the file a .svg? If it is, then you need to separate them in Inkscape first. If it is a scut, I think it would depend on if the parts were imported/added separately, or as a file.

If you open it with Inkscape, there is a "break apart" feature. You could always try that. I don't have Inkscape on my computer here at work so I can't tell you which menu it is under.

I am working in Inkscape but the break apart doesn't do anything. The file contains about 30 various shapes with matching mats. Whenever I try to select anything the lines always go around the entire page of images. I don't seem to be able to select just one file. Also, with a lot of my files, nothing shows up in the update box. It's just blank.

Try the ungroup feature couple or three times. If that doesn't work may not be a good svg file.

In Inkscape try using the node arrow on one of the images. Once it surrounds the object you can go up to the "select and transform object" arrow which will highlight the object and then copy it and put it on a new Inkscape page. Then save it as an SVG on that second page. Do this with each image. I have broken apart multi image pages this way.

Ungrouping more than once worked great. Thank you so much. I only have one problem left now. I'm cutting a file that has multiple pieces and I don't know how to keep them in proportion. I thought that if I just saved the pieces without changing the size that would work but I want my outside piece to be 12 x 12 so I had to change that. Now I'm getting the inside pieces in the wrong sizes. I thought to try to keep the numbers on that side box in scal the same size each time but that's not right. The inside pieces need to be smaller than 12 x 12 to fit into the frame the way they're supposed to. I tried changing the width and height in Inkscape to 12 x 12 but it won't stay that way. Help!

Thanks so much,
Susan
