Would someone please help me update my SCAL, DS and firmware

I am totally computer illiterate when it comes to these things!
I recently bought some newer Cricut cartridges and would like to be able to use them in DS. I currently have the original "update" on both software.
I have read about people having problems with their machine not working etc. so I would like to do this right the first time.
Eg. Which software do I update first - if it matters, and how exactly do I do this?
How do I update my firmware on my machine?
I would really appreciate someone helping me do this step by step.

If you have updated your firmware before, you should not have to do it again.

To update the firmware you have to have DS installed. I have read about problems, too, so I used an old copy of DS recently when I had to help someone else recently. Open DS, click on help and then update firmware. Then follow the instructions on the screen.

I'd recommend doing this before installing the DS upgrade, but I don't know this from experience.

To my knowledge there have been no issues with SCAL updates, so I'd say update SCAL at your leisure.
