How can I find SVG scroll or swirl files?
How can I find SVG scroll or swirl files?
I don't know what kind of a graphic file this would be called. I would like various kinds of swirls, well, curves really, to cut in different colors of paper and transparencies to put along edges or corners of my pages. Does anybody know where I could find these kinds of swirls to cut, or could anybody teach me how to make my own in Inkscape? I did see a tutorial of sorts on the web, but it made a lot of assumptions - that you already know how to use the bezier tool for example. TIA

Thank you for the link. There are some lovely things there I'll have to try using. I just found some swirls that I think are nice: http://opengraphicdesign.com/print/deco ... ls-vector/. There may be more things on this site too, I just stumbled upon it and that was the first thing I found. Thanks again!

http://opengraphicdesign.com/print/deco ... ls-vector/ is a zipped file. Unfortunately, there is no SVG file. You can open the .AI file in Inkscape, select all objects and ungroup all of the objects in order to get to the specific swirl you want. If you want to cut the design exactly as it is, it still needs to be opened into Inkscape and somehow (I don't know how off hand and may need help on this) all objects need to be welded together as many items are separate objects and may not cut as desired. When finished in Inkscape, save the design as an SVG file to import into SCAL. Some of the swirls do not need any manipulation. If you want to cut any of those, you still need to ungroup the object in Inkscape to remove what you do not want to cut, save it as an SVG file and import it into SCAL.craftycreationz wrote:I love the swirls file, but how do i use these in SCAL? If you are ready to cut any of the swirls and know what you want to cut, you can PM me and I'll help you as best as I can.

Wreed do the AI files give better quality than jpg in Inkscape or are they much of the same for having to clean up etc?wreed06 wrote: You can open the .AI file in Inkscape,

Well they are totally different files. AI files are from Adobe Illustrator. You can take the AI file and manipulate it in Adobe Illustrator as though you are the original designer. You can still work with the objects that are in the design - move them around, delete them, change them, etc. You have no control like that with a JPG. A JPG file is like a picture; it does not contain any objects. You can probably touch them up like you can a photograph, but you cannot (to my knowledge) play with the original objects like you can in an AI file.
I know how to separate and delete objects in Inkscape and do not know how to manipulate jpgs to cut correctly (haven't be through Susan's tutorial), so I prefer the SVG or AI files when I can get them. Note that not all AI files are created equal! I have run across some AI files that just will not open or import into Inkscape. I just throw out those files and move to the next.
Given the choice, I will choose AI over JPG if the AI works with Inkscape. If you know how to work with JPGs, then by all means, use them! The swirls are not that detailed and don't have to be exact anyway, so you should be fine.
No, I do not know how to write short answers! HTH
