How to take hand drawn pictures and make them SVG?

I have alot of cute hand drawn animals. I drew each piece seperate so for paper piecing you can cut and assemble them. I have them on paper. Can i get them to svg somehow? I really would love to be able to cut them!

I would scan them into jpg format, import them into inkscape and then they could be imported into SCAL.

However someone might know how to make them into dingbats straight off thereby avoiding the Inkscape stage if they are clean enough.
