LIne problems in inkscape

If I try to convert a line drawing (drawn by hand) to an SGV file ininkscape I am having real problems with the double lines.

I know that I have to use Path - break apart but sometimes the lines disappear altogether and others I am either left with a double line drawing or nothing!

Is there a particular type of pen/pencil that is best to use for line drawings - or do they have to be printed drawings in order to be able to convert them to SGV files?
