We use Inkscape to make designs that can be cut with SCAL. It is a program with a learning curve but I feel the more you use it, the easier it is. It is a vector-based editing program (you use nodes to modify shapes) instead of pixels as in photo editing software ( you can't erase, you have to delete nodes).
All of the designs on the board have been made with Inkscape or another vector editor program. Inkscape is a free program and well worth every penny of it...

Inkscape can be obtained from http://www.inkscape.org - you can also get a lot of information about it from this site as well as the help files.
