Can someone tell me step by step please

Post by Jayne »

I need this Hello Kittys outline only, nothing else....i took it into Inkscape and saved as an svg to a folder and opened SCAL and it isnt there, so i went to trace and it isnt in the folder...
How do you just get this as an ouline and save it then open it in SCAL....be aware, inkscape lingo means nothing to me so it would have to be step by step...

When you bring it to inkscape make sure you do trace image first or path/trace bitmap and then convert to svg.. If you only need the outline of the cat then go path/breakapart.. Keep the black part and delete the rest..

I dont know what i am doing wrong, i cant find trace anywhere....so i did path and trace bitmap and when it asked me i said ok another box opened and i said ok again and all i got was a load of dots...it looks nothing like my image, so i tried the break apart thing and nothing happens, it just stays the same, i cant delete anything

I am still using ink v.46, so I'm not sure if the steps are any different if you are using a more current version. Here is how to get just the "outline" of your image using ink:

1)Import or paste your image into ink.
2)Select the image and apply path>trace bitmap. Make sure it is set to brightness cutoff, and then click the preview button. If your image looks good, select ok. If you need to make the image lines darker, increase the threshold.
3)Move the traced image off the original image and then delete the original image to avoid confusion.
4)Select the traced image and apply path>break apart. This should make your image look solid. If for some reason the image is not solid, it is because somewhere there is a break in the path. Meaning the lines aren't connected in the image (this can be fixed, but that is another tut).
5)Select the bottom piece and move it to the side. This should be the outline of your image.
6)Delete remaining pieces and then save your image as an SVG.

You can also do this in SCAL and it is much simpler:

1)Trace image in SCAL
2)Select image and under the appearance tab apply style>blackout.

note:If for some reason, when you select blackout, the image is not just an outline, try retracing the image in scal and increasing the brightness. For this hello kitty image, I increased the brightness to 60 because at 50 it wasn't working. This is a good image to practice that on. Try tracing it in scal at the original setting of 50 and then using blackout. Then trace it again at a brightness of 60 and then using blackout. You will see the difference!

I hope this helps. :D

Ty for the instructions but it doesnt work...i cant do the break apart bit...nothing happens
As for SCAL....well thats another story....
I open scal and search for the image that i have just saved in Inkscape as a svg but in trace it cant be found, so i do import and i get a message saying "failed to load and then some stuff about vector not being there to import.....

It sounds like you either aren't tracing the image in Inkscape or you are deleting the trace instead of the image. You can leave the image in the svg file and it won't hurt anything. You will get a message when you import it into SCAL about embedded images and outlines, but as long as you have what you need to cut you can just ignore the message.

If you are going to trace the image in SCAL, you need the Image file, not the svg.

I am tracing the image and deleting the bottom image which i assume is the original, then i do the break apart thing which doesnt work, so i just saved the image as an svg, but then the stuff in my last post happens, when i go to scal and choose trace it isnt in my folder and then error message from import so i cant get it on my mat cos the error message won let me...
If i had what i needed to cut it i wouldnt be putting myself thru all this stress. i need the outline only but have no clue what i need to do to get just the outline.

For SCAL, you will be using the .jpg image to trace, not the svg. So when you search for it, go to where you saved the original .jpg and trace that. As for ink, I'm not sure why breakapart isn't working. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the image on your mat isn't selected when you perform the path function? Make sure that you click on the image and that it has the dotted box around it before you do path>breakapart. If that doesn't work, I'm stumped :?
