If you are downloading the files and they are zipped make sure that you unzip them first. If they aren't zipped make sure that your web browser isn't adding a different extension (like xml or txt) onto the end.
If you are making your own files make sure that any images are traced and shapes and fonts are converted to Path. A good check is to open the file in Inkscape and first press 4 to make sure everything is showing in the Ink window, then go to Vew/Display mode/Outline. Images will become red boxes with an X and unconverted fonts will remain solid. Anything converted to vector will have just an outline. HTH
