Merging a line with a shape

I am having trouble taking a line I made and merging it with a shape. I am make antenne for a caterpillar using a line and circle.

If you are using Inkscape and a line instead of a rectangle, you need to select the line and use Path/Stroke to path. Then you should be able to select the two pieces and use Path/Union. HTH
