Here's the short version. PLEASE consider reading the tutorials at paperthreads.com on inkscape & putting them to use as you read along. You'll be so happy that you did & won't need the tutorials once you've made a few things. Welding is VERY EASY!!!
*open your font organizer & the font you want to use if it's not installed on your computer
*open inkscape
*click the large "A" on the left side toolbar
*select your font with the drop down menu on the top left side, set size to 144
*click on your canvas, type your first letter, repeat again until you have typed all letters. typing all letters at once will not work
*click top sinlge arrow on left side tool bar
*click each individual letter & drag to desired loaction. clicking a second time will allow you to rotate the letters--not a double click, click once & then again. over lap & skew the letters as desired.
*click & drag a box around your text
*click path, object to path
*click path, union
viola!! you have a connected/welded title
directions for making a mat in another post.

Re: Inkscape: How to connect letters/weld a title
I am new to this...how do I get and what is Inkscapes?
Re: Inkscape: How to connect letters/weld a title
Inkscape is FREE software (http://www.inkscape.org) that you can download and weld letters & shapes, create mats/shadows for your images. All the fun stuff you can't do in SCA...
You create in Inkscape and then import into SCA to cut.
There are tutorials on this website that will make using Inkscape VERY easy. When you first open it it can seem overwhelming... but don't despair - just spend some time on this forum and you'll get lots of help.

Thanks so much for that abbreviated step by step instruction- there was a lot left out of the tutorial provided by Susie!

Am I missing something here? Can't you do all that in SCAL in just a few seconds??

I think the original post was before the welding update came out. The post dates are on the same date shown on SCAL's home page menu.

You can do it in SCAL... however... once its welded in SCAL and you want to resize it.. the letters gather up and bunch up and overlap way to much.
If you do it in inkscape first, and then import it into SCAL you can size it all you want, and the spacing wont change a bit.
