Can anyone help me figure out how to use the layers in Inkscape? This is probably a really idiotic question, but I can't figure out how to actually get the image into the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. layers.
Let's say I have a file in Inkscape that I want to cut in three layers, for example a letter with a double mat, each in a different color. I know I could break apart the file into the three components, move them each to different areas of the page and cut them that way. But, I believe I could put each component into its' own layer, and then turn that layer off to cut them individually. But how do I go about setting up the layers?
TIA
Using layers in Inkscape
Re: Using layers in Inkscape
I find it easiest to display the layer window at all times when working with layers. You can bring it up by selecting the Layers Menu and then Layers... or Shift+Ctrl+L
Once you have the window open, you can create a layer and add objects to it using the + command button on the layers window. Once the layer is complete, you can then lock it by clicking on the padlock in the layers window. To move pieces to other layers, select the objects and use the Layers menu to move the layers up or down. You can see which layer you are working with in the Layers window, it will be the highlighted layer.
I typically name my layers, it's much easier to remember what should be on what layer, you have this option when you create a new layer.

I use these commands, multiple times as required
layer>move selection to layer above
layer>move selection to layer below
layer>move selection to layer above
layer>move selection to layer below

Re: Using layers in Inkscape
Layers work the way you described in INK but once you move to SCAL where you cut, the layers that are turned off will not show. In other words, layers have no affect once in SCAL.
You have to place the objects on one page to cut in SCAL. When you do that, leave space between because there is a difference in the physical and the virtual layout mat in SCAL, about quarter inch I believe.
