Help Creating an SVG
Ok so I'm totally new to inkscape and SCAL and I could really use some help. I am trying to make an svg file of the Hershey Bears logo for a decal. I tried to make one and it didn't come out right. This is a very details logo, which might be the problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

How many colors are you cutting? If you are only cutting one color, I would just use the color trace, deselect the smoothing option. Ungroup the result, move the black layer off the top, and delete the rest. I would also delete some of the smaller bits as well. If you still are having problems pm me and I will send you the file.

Tink, I have a video that shows tracing a color team logo using the paint bucket technique. It might help.

Re: Help Creating an SVG
ok i got it to work... i have no idea how ... but i did! i tried to "grab" the black parts but it wouldnt work then i trid to seperate it and it finally did? idk.... so i had a black and white outline of it but i was missing the lil pieces in between the letters like the b's a's r's and such so i filled them in with the bucket in black then moved the colored image and placed the black and white one over it where the middles of the letters were to make it full and saved it... if that makes any sense?
i watched the video.... but i wasnt able to "grab and collect" the same color images.... i dont kno what i was doing wrong but i took the paint bucket and it wouldnt highlight the outside??

Re: Help Creating an SVG
The "highlighting" was for purposes of the video. It doesn't look that way unless you have the stroke set to hot pink, but if you go to outline mode you should see whether it is working or not.

PLEASE HELP ME !!! I have read and read and I almost can get a object to convert in Inkscape to a SVG but when I go over to Sure Cuts Alot to cut it it has different pieces in it that I didnt put in there??? Like I did an apple and seperated the stim and the leaves on top from the apple. Well when I pull it up it had two extra circles in it.??? Also another question ? If you get a file that is SVG off of the forum there isnt anything you have to do to it because it should already cut in SVG ???? IM so confused and just ready to call it quites on this IM so frustrated. PLEASE HELP ME !!!

Not sure what's going on with the extra bits, but the 2nd part of your question re svg's off of the forum, definately nothing else you have to do, just save them to your computer, make a folder for them all or somewhere you can easily find them, then open SCAL and under File, go to: Import SVG, find the file you saved and it will appear on your screen's virtual mat, ready to cut or resize or whatever you want to do with it.akhall3 wrote:PLEASE HELP ME !!! Hope that helps you a lil bit, sorry it is turning out frustrating for you, but you will soon get the hang of it.... trust me

Re: Help Creating an SVG
First, open your file in Inkscape and from the menu select View/Display mode/outline. See if that makes your extra pieces show up. When I am working on a new file I like to turn off the fill so that I can see everything better. You will need to turn stroke on if it isn't already on. Second, View the message bar at the bottom of the Ink window. If it lists any kind of group, select all (control A) and from the menu Object/Ungroup. Select all again, and repeat the ungroup if any groups are still listed.akhall3 wrote:PLEASE HELP ME !!! As far as svg files go, some are ready for cutting, and some aren't.

Re: Help Creating an SVG
I am not sure about the extra circles either, but I have put together a troubleshooting guide for blank svgs that may help:
in Inkscape
Check the Outline View by selecting View>Display mode>Outline
to see if it looks like what you want to cut
If the Outline View does not show as expected then...
If you imported a bitmap (jpg, png, bmp, gif, etc.) did you autotrace it? (You will see a red x in outline mode if a bitmap was not autotraced)
If not, select it, then Path>Trace Bitmap
If you autotraced, did you delete the bitmap version, and not the vector version. (You will see a red x in outline mode if you accidently deleted the vector copy)
Did you convert text into objects?
If not, select text then Path>Object to Path
If the Outline View does show as expected
then
Have you ungrouped everything?
If not then select all then Object>Ungroup repeatedly until the message at bottom of screen says there are no objects to ungroup.
(You can use Path>Combine but SCAL doesn't like Grouping)
If none of that works then
-Double check that the file you imported was really an SVG. Check this (and prevent future occurences) by not selecting "All Files" in the file type menu of the Import dialog box.
-Make sure the image is made up of closed paths, Inkscape can not cut lines, per se.
-Make sure all objects are within the page boundaries. (Select all, then View>Zoom>Drawing to check for stray objects or parts of the image that extend past the page boundaries.)
-Make sure that all shapes are converted to paths (select each shape, then Path>Object to Path)
If none of these solve the problem, try one or these
-Select all then change the colors (click the color bar at the bottom of the screen).
-Select all, then copy, then open a new document and paste.
