Well, I want to do it in vinyl for my laundry schute. What do you think?

I really want someone to teach me how to do it, so I don't have to keep asking for help all the time. I'd be grateful for someone to do it for me, but I really want to learn.

Any ideas on what would look good?

Thanks so much, you guys have been amazing!

I think all the detail is okay for what I am doing, but it would be nice to know how to take some of it out. I wouldn't even know where to start.

I guess for now, just knowing how to convert it to the svg file is what I should start with.

Maybe 2 separate posts would be good, if someone has the time and patience for me, or if they could give me a link where I could go to read up on it, that would be great too!

thanks!

If you like the video tutorials, see this post. http://forums.surecutsalot.com/viewtopi ... =18&t=3695
If you like written tutorials, try here http://www.craftedge.com/tutorials/tutorials.html and here http://forums.surecutsalot.com/viewtopi ... &sk=t&sd=a

That image you posted was available as svg. To remove some of the detail, you can simply open it in Inkscape, make sure everything is ungrouped, and start clicking on the small bits and deleting. You can also use the node tool, and shorten or delete lines. It really depends on the image and what you want it to look like. YOU are the one that has to transfer the vinyl from the mat to the wall. :D

Here is the svg file. I deleted some of the bits, connected others, and simplified (control L). You might want to delete more of the small bits.

Cutting the hand that you want in Vinyl in my opinion is not going to be easy. I recently cut a hand in vinyl. See this topic http://forums.surecutsalot.com/viewtopi ... =33&t=4219 and check out the picture. The lines in the palm and finger cut, but if they weren't connected to anything on both sides, they moved on me while cutting. It still worked, because I was able to weed it (remove the unwanted parts) and move them back where they belong. The artwork that you have has a lot of lines that aren't connected on both ends, so I am thinking the vinyl is going to come unbonded from it's backing and move around on you. Here is a picture on another pointing finger closer to the one that you have and not as detailed. Clear contact paper works great for transferring viny. I used it on the vinyl in the picture and it was very easy to do.

Did you find a hand you liked? I saw this one today and thought it was similar in style to the one you wanted.

This is how my laundry schute turned out in the end: (of coarse the kids had to help model the finished product!)

Thanks for the help, I love how it turned out!

That looks very cool! Your hand turned out well. Was it hard to cut?

It was not hard at all. The weeding was a little tricky, but once I got going and used a straight pin, it started to get easier. I was very pleased with the way it turned out.

Thanks for the advice, now I know what I am doing and feel totally confident with inkscape and love using the program.
