I am so new to this and not understanding what a dingbat is and how to go about getting an image to cut out. I am fine with the fonts but my library is empty and I am not sure how to fill it. Are dingbats free to put into the library and where do you get them? Someone asked me the other day if I could cut out a scorpion for them, and I had to honesty reply that I don't know?!?!

A dingbat is like a font. You can find many free ones online. There are links to some websites through the craft edge pages, or you can do a search online (for example "scorpion dingbat free") If you find one you like, download it and install it into your fonts folder. Some dingbats are too complex to cut without editing. Look through Susan Bluerobots tuts to learn more about it.
Here is a link to a scorpio svg file, http://jpe.gs/wiki/Image:Scorpion-md-v0.1.svg and if you search for scorpion image you will find many more images that can be traced in inkscape.

Thanks for the help and advice. I checked out the scorpion (very cool) - would it cut it out just like that including the shadow or is there a way to change it, or do I just pick a different dingbat? I am printing out Susan Bluerobots tut as I type this, and I am hoping that after reading that I will have a whole new understanding of everything SCAL. Thanks again, Patti

You can download this image (or others like it) by right clicking on it, and Save Target As. You would need to change the extension from .sml to .svg. It turns out this one won't cut very well as is since it is all Object/group and SCAL doesn't like groups. If you wanted a dimensional project (with lot of little pieces) you could separate all of the parts. I ungrouped everything and did Path/union to give a silhouette. You might be better off tracing some of the other images since part of what made this one striking was the shading.
