Here is a clip showing the Goo Gone and Alene's glue method. I use the Goo Gone without problem. I do let it sit first. Then use a scratchless scrunge pad and got great results.
Perhaps you did not let the Goo Gone do it's work first and then scraped a little to hard or used something more abrasive and it ruined your mat??
