Fonts do not export to .svg

For some reason, when I create font words, they will not export to .svg. Is anyone else having this problem with eCal?

I am making cards for a doctor's office and need the .svg files. I am using normal fonts found in the software, they save in .scut3 just fine, but when I export them to save as .svg it comes out blank.

I just tested it with SCAL 3, and Ariel font exports fine...which font are you using exactly.
I know you are using ECAL, but they should work the same. Someone else will test that too. Tell us the font.

I am using "Segoe Script" and I am welding the letters. I have not tried another font, but I will do that now.

I tried another font and it still did not work. I tried words that I purchased from SVG Cuts and that worked, but that is of no help to me.

Try taking a snip or screen shot of the words as you want them. Put a white rectangle behind them and take the picture,...then bring in via trace and trace for a new file.

I don't know what is going on...this is another glitch apparently.

If you do not need to edit the text (as in retype something) then select the text object and use Object->Object To Path before exporting the SVG.

That should lock in the text as a path, this would be necessary if you were sharing the file as if the person opening it does not have the font used it would fail when opened.

I THINK Ecal has the Object->Object To Path, if not you can do the same thing using path->Intersection..

Create a rectangle larger than the text and place it over the text.
Select the text and the rectangle
Use path->Intersection

Both methods will convert the font object into a path object which should save in the SVG fine

Okay, I did the Object to path thing and it did save. I really do not understand why, but that is a good temporary fix so that I can finish my project.

It is not just an issue with Ecal.. you can have similar problems with Inkscape as well..

Font objects rely on the font being present on the computer so not a great idea when sharing even if it works on your computer that does not mean it will on another.

the only time I leave a font object without converting it to a path is if I am using a bog standard font like Arial, even then if it is a vital part of the design I will nearly always convert it to a path just to be double safe

I was able to export Segoe Script from eCAL without doing anything extra to it and it opened as a vector in Inkscape. It did not stay welded, so you will need to use Path/Union. Your file will now export to svg with the letters permanently welded together (Union).

What program are you using the SVG file in? SCAL exports SVG files as a Grouped Path and SCAL1 doesn't like Groups. Also, what version of eCAL are you using?


BTW, It is not necessary to convert text to path to share files with fonts when using SCAL2 and newer. I was told that SCAL2/3/eCAL embed the font info so that it is no longer necessary for someone to have a font to use a SCUT file. HTH

That seems a bit wrong to me, some font files are copyright and you have to buy them, embedding the actual font would be bit naughty in those cases?

However, it was not an issue with the font not working when saved in SCAL format, it was when exporting to SVG and SVG does not embed font files
