Need help converting a file from jpg to svg

I have watched a few tutorials already about Inkscape, and have followed what I thought I was supposed to do, but I have a jpeg file that I need turned into an SVG. Can someone walk me through the steps, or possibly do it for me?

I really want to learn how to do this, so if anyone has a very easy to understand tutorial, please let me know where to go for it.

I was successful one time in changing it to an svg, but it didn't look anything like the file was supposed to. It was all jacked up and messy looking?!?

The steps vary quite a bit depending on what your image looks like so I put together a pictorial index of tutorials. It is SCAL1 vintage so if you have SCAL2 you may be able to do the autotracing and breaking apart there instead of in Inkscape when you get to those steps.

I couldn't figure out how to make this into a working link, sorry...but I think you can copy/paste into your browser and it should come up. anyway...I just did it today...with inkscape and this tut from youtube. very easy. I put the youtube up and then opened up inkscape and kept going back and forth step by step.
forget the part in the tut about making a card out of the project. just do the first steps...then do the saving part...and that's it.
I tried it again a couple more times, just downloading a jpeg pic off the web into my documents...and following the instructions again. I will say that I just wanted an outline shape of a bumblebee...and never did get the part on the youtube about taking out the inner dotted edge from the design...but no problem, cause I just used it in blackout or shadow format in SCAL and it worked perfectly.

Susan Bluerobot has some great tuts (as do others on our forum) I printed out the lesson I wanted and followed along step by step. After repeating many times, it finally lodged in my pea brain. I always have to refer back to the tut on using the paint bucket way of doing it which was posted on our forum in the Tutorial section.
