Separating an image

Post by Col »

How do I separate the sections of this image so that I can cut them in different colors? I've imported it into Inkscape but now I don't know what to do next.

When I open the file, all I get is a box.

When I go to the site you are referring to it is a gif not a scut or svg. It needs to be converted before breaking apart. There are wonderful tuits on this site.

That image is a little low res (only 29 kb), you can use it, but you should probably take it into a photo editing program and make the lines around the mouth sharper (darker). The best trace I could get as-is was with a Brightness threshold of 0.29 and some of the lines were still broken.

You might try the paint bucket tool. See Firstcut's blog for more on that. http://cleversomeday.wordpress.com/2009 ... -inkscape/

See if this works for you. I separated each color into a separate cut, and have sized it to make approximately 6 inch wide project when finished. See the instructions in the Readme file included.

Toolees

Thanks. Here is a copy of Chuck in his glory. Sorry for the colors I took it with an iphone.
I ended up putting all of the layers onto one project so I could reduce the size of the image. Is there an easier way to reduce all of the images
so that the reduction is symetrical for all of the pieces? It took forever to do it the way I did.

Essentially the way I made the SCUT files is to open the SCAL software and layer each of the SVG's on top of each other, sizing them appropriately so they come out right in the end. Once you have everything sized properly, move each cut so that they are no longer on top of each other, then delete all but one cut and save the SCUT file. Then perform an "undo" until you get all the cuts back on screen again, and proceed accordingly. Soon you should have each cut sized appropriately, and saved in it's own SCUT file. It is time consuming, but I really don't know any other way.
