MAKING A SHADOW or OUTLINE OF TEXT in Inkscape

Post by tonwon73 »

Hi all! Ok I know someone can help me with my question, as there are a lot of very smart and talented members on this board. I need to know how to make a shadow out of the text I created in Inkscape, or how to outline it somehow. I tried duplicating the text and just resizing it so that it was bigger than the original text, but every way I try I cannot get it to line up right when I lay one on top of the other. I hope this makes sense. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it, my BF husband will be home in Aug from Iraq and she wants me to make their welcome home shirts and I really need to create a layered look in Inkscape.
TIA,
Tonya

I tried making a copy of the text and then using the outset option in the path menu, but I didn't get a nice "crisp" shadow like I was looking for. I'm interested to find out if someone else has another way to make a shadow for text.

In Inkscape you would use either linked offset or Path/Outset.

Linked offset - select your text, from the menu, Path/Linked offset, click on the little white square that appears and drag it until you have the size you want, Path/Object to path. This gives you your original text and a shadow or mat.

Path/Outset - Select your text, Control D, Path/Outset until you have the size shadow you want.

Linked offset gives you more control over the size of your shadow, but if your image is very complex it can be a little sluggish (at least on an old computer like mine). HTH

Heather M, thank you so much, those steps worked great for me, exactly what I was wanting to do. I know you have helped me before and I greatly appreciate it. I have been trying to sit down and learn Inkscape and it takes lots of time and concentration, I dont think I will probably ever be as talented as you and some of the members on this board. I'm sure other members will agree with me that all the hard work and help from the members in this forum is greatly appreciated. Heather thank you again.
