Inkscape-trace an image

Can anyone explain how to scan or import a picture into Inkscape; trace around it and cut only that section? i.e. A picture of flowers and you only want to cut one of them? Can this be done? thank you in advance.

I wish I could help you with this.. I am still learning myself. I will be watching to see what you get for the answer...

I would think, being the advanced program that Inkscape is, that it can do this. Since I am not well versed 'yet' with Inkscape I would scan my images in and bring them up in my graphics program making changes to the design there. Then I would save as a .jpeg and open them in Inkscape, do the trace and save as .svg.
