Cricut keeps cutting up images...

My cricut has always had a problem with cutting up my images when the blade drags across the page to where it needs to cut, it actually cuts instead of just moving in place. The blade pressure is set to 5, and the little green thing that holds the blade is set to 1. I have pressed the red button on the inside of the cricut several times and switches the dials from 5 down to 1 slowly. I can't remember how to reset the cricut, but it worked last year when I did it. Can anyone help me?
