HELP! "Checking Mat"

I'm trying to get back to using my Cricut personal v1.34 with windows 8. I have downloaded my original SCAL2 without a problem. When I go to 'cut' it freezes on "checking mat" PLEASE HELP..... is there an update? Is there a compatibility problem? My usb cord is properly working.
