xml files

Post by mebarb2 »

Hi! This may be a stupid question but I downloaded two free files but both have an extension of svg.xml. I know I have to get rid of the xml extension to be able to use the file in SCAL, but I can't figure out how to do that! I'm on a mac (which could be part of the problem since I'm new to both a mac and to SCAL!) and the file went to my download file and I put one file on my desktop, but I can't just right click and rename the file. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi, not a stupid question at all. Many of us have found this annoying.

You see this when you download the .svg file

file name.svg.xml right?

All you have to do is delete the .xml part. My Mac asks me if I want to use .svg yes or no I say Wes and I now have a working, load able file that will load into SCAL, eCAL, or Inkscape.

I am not able to save files without the xml extension after the svg.

On my MAC, when I try to delete the xml I get this error message (cut and pasted verbatim) : "You cannot save this document with extension “.svg” at the end of the name. The required extension is “.xml”.

I know in the past when I had a PC I could just delete the xml. Is there a setting somewhere on a Mac that I need to change? Hope someone can help me with this

there is no rename on mac (right click>rename would be very handy but) so
find the file in finder
click it once to highlight it
click it again but this time click the name NOT the icon - I tend to count to three between to two clicks
now the name should be highlighted except for the extension (the bit you want)
just move the cursor to the end of the file name
delete the .xml leaving just the filename & .svg
hit return/enter
you should get a pop up asking if you want to use .svg or keep .svg.xml - just choose the one to use .svg (this might not happen)
but now you should have your file ending in .svg.
