Why can't I get this castle just to be a silhouette? What am I doing wrong?

Well, it has other lines on it. SCAL will cut those. You need to edit it so that those lines are gone and there is just an outline only. You can do it in Inkscape, but for me the easiest way is to edit it in PhotoShop (because I'm more familiar with PS) and then open it in Inkscape to turn it into a SVG.

I tried it and if you set the Brightness Control to 750, it should trace right.
