Failed to load SVG file

Post by Andie »

I finally figured out how to get an outline of my picture I wanted to print on vinyl. However, it would not print because the picture was bigger than my map, even though what I wanted to cut and print out was on the map. So I took the picture in Inkscape (which I am not very good at, at all) I did some sort of bitmap stuff and shape around it and got my shape around the picture so it was smaller. Then I saved it as an SVG so i could bring into SCAL and then I could put my outline around and do the cut and print thing. Anyway, when I try and bring the svg file in that I created, I get a pop up that says "Failed to load SVG file." So what did I do, did I got about it wrong in inkscape? I am attaching-at least I hope- what I am trying to bring in SCAL. My outline that I created then goes around the girls. I am also including the outline that I made to go around the picture. I hope this makes enough sense for someone to help me. i tried to cut a shape around the pic in SCAL but I could not make it happen so that is why I brought it in inkscape

Just bring the image into Scal. Go File/place image right into scal. Your image in Inkscape wasn't traced.. that's why the picture isn't showing.. You have to do a trace bitmap..

I brought/placed it into scal. I am tried to attach (file too big) what I bring into SCAl, but it is the whole 4x6 picturee which is too big and if I make it smaller then the girls are too small. So that is why I wanted to cut a shape aroond just the girl so I could make it smaller. Then I can make just the girls the size I want.

I think what you want to do is just print part of your image without the background? The image isn't embedded in the svg file, so I can't help with that directly. What you want to do is to export your outline from SCAL as an svg if you don't already h, then open the svg file with the image and import the outline svg file into that. Line up the image and the outline, then use Object/Clip/Set. With your image selected you will want to export bitmap (File/Export bitmap). You can then place the png image in SCAL.

Did you try to resize/re-position your original image directly in SCAL? You should be able to resize it using the Position/Size window, then drag it to where the part you need will print. HTH

ETA The "Failed to load svg file" message came up because all you have in your svg file is the image link, and SCAL only imports the vectors in svg files.

The outline does need to be on top to use as a Clip. Either select the outline then the Home key or the image and the End key to change the order. Home will move the selected object to the top and End will move it to the bottom. You are probably working within one layer, so there aren't layers to change the order of. I exported the outline to svg and didn't see a white square. I've attached your original svg file with the outline included. I removed the fill and set a stroke on it so that you can see where you are placing it.
