SCAL? Gypsy? Is there a difference
Michael's had the Gypsy for a great doorbuster price that I couldn't pass up. Once I opened it, found out there wasn't any instructions, then looked online to see what the Gypsy was all about, I still am confused.
I have seen and admired so many layouts made with SCAL, that I want it too. However, I can only afford one. Can anyone offer their suggestion as to having one over the other? I see that SCAL welds just as it says the Gypsy does. I know the Gypsy you can take anywhere, but I'm a full time working mother and do my crafting when I have free time. TIA for any advice!!!

The Gypsy is great if you are only going to use their carts as that is what it was made for. You can weld any image from any cart to create your own unique images once you have installed them on the Gypsy. If you don't plan on purchasing all (or several) of the carts, then I would recommend SCAL as you can use any svg that you can find. If you don't have the time to "create" for yourself, there are literally thousands of free (and some that are available for a small fee too) svg's out there that you can to download and use. If you want to create your own, you can do that too.
Basically, with the Gypsy, you are limited to the shapes that available on the carts that PC produces. There are many ppl who love the images available on their carts, and have no need for any other source of images to create with. I love the carts too, but find that there are many, many artists out there with just as nice images for free or almost free. With SCAL, the possibilities are endless! I personally would choose SCAL, as I have no interest in purchasing a bunch of carts and being limited. But , everyone is different and it depends on how you plan on using your cricut. I would research a little and see what suits your crafting time/style most. Good Luck!
P.S. If you do decide on SCAL, you should take a look at http://www.scrappingtable.com/home.html as she has free sets (that are much like carts) that she creates and gives away free if you purchase SCAL through her.

Amy, thanks so much for your reply! I have about 13 carts from Cricut. I willcontinue my normal purchases of carts, which is not very often, so I don't believe I will be " hurting" PC that much.
I love my Cricut but like what you pointed out, there are SO many other shapes and fonts that just aren't offered. I'm going to be taking my Gypsy back and purchasing SCAL. It seems like the way to go and I will be going to the website you gave me!
If I just purchase the instant download without the cd, I should be fine, right? Or is it better to purchase with the cd?

I did the download and have had no problem whatsoever. Remember that any questions you have once you get going with SCAL can be posted here and 99.99% of the time will be answered swifly and with lots of knowledge! Don't ever hesitate to ask!

I think SCAL would be a better fit for you. I have a Gypsy too and one of the girls who collect cartridges. It's a must have for me. I have 71 cartridges now. I also love my SCAL.
If you don't really need a storage device for your cartridges or have a lot of cartridges then the Gypsy can be a bit of an overkill in my opinion. The only thing I use my Gypsy for is to store my cartridges so I won't have to mess with the overlays and keypads. I can mix and match my designs without the huge hassle. If I only had two dozen cartridges for example I would not own a Gypsy. I rather collect cartridges when I wanted them and maybe purchase the Gypsy down the road at another date when I had a bigger collection.
SCAL is way cheaper in the long run and I think more powerful. You are designing. You can find your files on the Internet. Cut any fonts available. If you are a busy Mom then SCAL is the better option.
