Tile alternatives?

I love the tiles with vinyl, and have a ton, but I'm looking for other ideas to put vinyl on. I'm doing a craft show in November, and of course don't want to spend a lot of money, and love the ease of the tile. Some wood perhaps? I'd have to cut it and paint it. blah.

I was looking on a website (don't remember which one) but the guy did a lot of wood carving and I decided to try clay. I believe the E or my Gazzy will cut clay...gonna start with the air-drying clay first cuz I want to cut the clay and possibly the same shape to cover. If it takes air clay a couple of hours to harden then I will try cutting before it gets too hard...just a little firmness so the blade won't drag the clay too much. I have a pasta machine so I can roll out a thin piece and try cutting.

I had suggested clay so I tried it and the pieces cut beautifully and clay is so easy to paint and decorate.

I used a Gazelle instead of a Cricut. Since the Cricut will cut gum paste it will probably cut clay. You may need the a deep cut blade and maybe even the deep housing to keep the blade from dragging across the cut when it's traveling.

Thanks so much for th clay idea!! That would be great. I have a troop of girl scouts and what possibilities cutting a bunch of our own clay shapes would open for us! Thanks for the suggestion!!

I was so excited when it worked. And the good thing about clay it that it is so forgiving...if you mess the shape up, just knead it and try again. I used a clay machine (glorified pasta machine) to roll it thin enough to cut and there is a setting on the machine where you can get it as thin a paper. However using it that thin requires a skilled hand but it is good for layering.

I believe your troop will enjoy using clay. As I said before it is easy to work with. I advise you to mirror the shape before you cut so that any imperfections will be on the bottom and any problems on top will be easier to smooth out.

I have put vinyl on so many things. You can check out my blog for some inspiration. I had a craft show and the wood blocks and dry erase boards did well.

Love the wood blocks! I'll have to look for them - maybe AC Moore or Michaels has them? With the platters - do people wonder if they are usable or just for decoration? I'm thinking something that needs to be cut shouldn't be put on it, and hand wash?
