Help please on updating cricut

Hi Everyone! I am a newbie at the Cricut. I have the Cricut Personal V1. I also have Sure Cuts Alot and trying to get this all to work has been a nightmare. I downloaded the free trial of Cricut Design Studio and held the STOP button down and hit the start button until the machine chirped, but I still have an error in cutting. The USB is finally installed properly at least.
Could someone here give me a step by step or send me the address of a you tube video on the subject. I really wanted to make some glitter tattoo stencils for this weekend, but right now I just feel like this has been a waste of time and money, but the way I go through tatt stencils it would save me a lot of money IF I COULD JUST GET IT TO WORK!

Have you purchased the full version of SCAL already.. ?? If you have and are getting that cutting error.. turn your cricut off... plug it into your computer, then open SCAL and then turn on your cricut and then all should be good.... Before you used to be able to just plug it into your computer after turning it on but that changed somewhere along the line.l

Thank you all who answered! I finally found out how to install the firmware update from Design Studio free trial. I had to go to HELP in DS and then update firmware and THEN it installed without a problem! Then everything worked beautifully!!!!!!
