What do I need???

Post by dmurray407 »

I have the original Cricut with version 1.32 firmware, I have the Cricut Design Studio version 1.0121104.0 and I have the original Sure Cuts A Lot version 1.016. I don't use my Cricut a lot (obviously ;) ) but my grand daughters are really getting into making little scrapbooks so I think I will be needing to get up to speed here. First of all, the last time I used everything, it all worked, so I'm thinking it still will. I'm currently taking a class on Design Studio at My Creative Classroom ( http://www.mycreativeclassroom.com/cour ... php?id=191 ) and the first thing the instructor says to do is to update the Cricut and Design Studio-now, I remember when I first bought SCAL, everyone said to NEVER update the firmware because SCAL might not work with the new version. Is this true? I would just as soon leave everything the way it is unless I absolutely need to upgrade. Now, I see checking here for an answer to my question (if I upgrade, will my current version of SCAL still work?), there is a new version of SCAL-what are the advantages to ugrading? Is there a big difference between SCAL 1 and SCAL 2? And will everything I have still work if I upgrade? I hope this makes sense-I just don't want to make any mistakes-I use SCAL more than I use Design Studio and don't want to mess anything up.
Thanks!
Deb

A definite difference between SCAL 1 and 2 .. Scal 2 now has the ungroup and breakapart, union and so many other new features.. Too many to mention.. But if you got to the Sure Cuts a Lot folder it will tell you about SCAL2... and what it does..
Also .. a lot of people did update CDS and they've had no problems.. I think you need 2.2 CDS update to use your SCAL .. but I may be wrong. I've never updated my expression further and I have never encountered a problem...

I definately would upgrade to SCAL 2.10. Wonderful program. It is easier to convert images into something you can cut without having to use inkscape. I have updated the firmwear, CDS and SCAL and works just fine.

Kay has a comparison chart with the features of SCAL1 and SCAL2 on her blog. http://cleversomeday.wordpress.com/2009 ... omparison/

SCAL1 and SCAL2 are completely separate programs, and you can use both if you upgrade. Some of the big changes between SCAL1 and SCAL2 are that SCAL2 imports svg files at the size they were made at, has layers, can trace images, edit vectors and fonts, has boolean Path operations (lets you add and subtract from images), and lets you break apart svg files, fonts, and scut files.
