Patterened Paper Issue

Post by gluestick »

Does anyone have a problem with cutting thinner patterned paper. I have tried just about everything and it just will not cut. It cuts K&Company's patterened paper just fine. But the stuff like you get from Michaels's it just eats it up! I can even cut Bazzill cardstock without a problem. Is it me or just the cheaper paper.

Have you changed the setting on the needle holder (forget what it is actually called). That and the setting on the machine itself may help. I cut regular paper all the time and for some of it, especially if it is detailed, I also slow down the cutter speed.

Try adjusting your blade depth (the green thing that holds your blade secure has a dial on top which I think goes up to 6). Maybe try it on 3 and play with the pressure and speed. I have not had a problem with thin patterned paper. I used to have problems cutting construction paper (the kind used in schools) but found that with the speed at 2, pressure at 3, and the blade depth turned to 3, it cuts perfectly. I also decided to start keeping a list for myself for what settings worked for different kinds of paper. I have only cut construction paper and Bazzil paper since so I don't have a good suggestion for the paper you are using right now.

Good luck!

I have done everything that has been suggested but I can't cut this stuff. It is almost like the matt isn't thick enough for the blade to reach this paper. Wondering if anyone has used any spray adhesive that won't coat the blade to adhere this thin paper onto, slightly heavier paper. I bought some cardstock from Walmart to use for practice runs and I think if I can adhere this paper to it, it would probably cut.

I use Xyron's glue runner - about 2 inches wide. Someone on these boards suggested it and it works great. It is pretty strong, so be careful taking it up. I let it dry a little bit before adhering anything to it. In fact, you might cut, or at least adhere heavier paper to the board without cutting a time or two before using the thin paper. Definitely go slower with thin paper.

If the blade does not reach the paper, you need higher pressure either from the dial or from the blade cartridge itself. Try making the blade cartridge number higher. Also, is the blade cartridge inserted correctly? The black arms holding the cartridge should be in the middle of the cartridge (I put mine in with the arms in the lower half of the cartridge before!).

You really should have no problem cutting thinner paper. If the paper is bunching on you, then maybe you do need a stronger adhesive or use a slower speed. If the blade doesn't reach the paper, then you need a different setting. If the paper is ripping or tearing, you might night stronger adhesive or go at a slower speed. Some papers may just not be good cutting candidates. I haven't had much luck cutting regular printer paper that I sometimes use for practicing designs - it cuts but mostly just shreds.

Sorry, I thought the blade was tearing the paper.

If the blade is not cutting the paper at all, try making a shim. When using a shim (and it might not work but I had to use them when I had the Sizzix machine), you can try taping the paper on the underside of the mat. You should tape it right at the edge of the side you are loading into the machine...not the cutting edge of the mat but the actual edge of the mat. That way you can lift the mat higher without worrying about tearing your thin paper if you glue it to another piece.

The same thing happend to me, and then I realized I didn't put my needle holder thingy (don't know name LOL) in right. You might start from scratch, put the needle back in correctly, redo everything you are doing. I know for me, if I am tired, I can personally mess it all up! LOL :) kristi (myscrapchick)
