Call PC regarding your Cricut which should still be under warranty and beware of TMI (TOO MUCH INFORMATION). If they ask you any questions as to what you were doing at the time, just tell them you were using the machine in the proper manner, which is to cut paper, and it stopped working. If they ask you about 3rd party software, it really is none of their business what software you have loaded on your computer (that info is only revelant to someone working on your computer).
SCAL is only software...it has absolutely nothing to do with hardware, the actual Cricut itself. To even use SCAL, you have to use PC's DSS to upgrade the firmware. If the firmware version if imbedded on the Cricut board, you have to use DSS to upgrade the firmware which DSS instructs you to do.

Re: Cricut Warranty
I contacted Todd to see if he had any ideas as to what to do about my Cricut not working and he thought there was a way to reset the Cricut somehow. He thought that a reset may get it working again. Does anyone know how to do that? Just to clarify, my cricut stopped working in the middle of a cut and after taking mat out, turning it off and then back on then there was no function...no LED screen, no movement of parts, nothing. If not for the lite on/off button, it would seem like it was unplugged.

Re: Cricut Warranty
I just called Provo Craft and they asked no questions about 3rd party software and are sending out a replacement. Just a thought to add...I'm wondering if all those defective machines that are sent back to them are then refurbished and then sent out to people like me as the replacement. I'm all for recycling, but I would hate to continually have problems with defective machines. Also, does the warranty period start over with their "replacements"? I'm relieved for now that a working machine is coming. I've been doing a lot of research since my Cricut went down and it seems like there are quite a few people who have had problems with their "bugs." And I might add there are many people who are not using SCAL and having problems. So the scare tactic PC is putting out there about not using "3rd party software" or your machine will be damaged is unfounded.

Re: Cricut Warranty
I thought I read something on TwoPeas where someone said that there was some sort of legal precedent about the warranty voiding thing. If I am remembering right the person said that there was a legal precedent where the case said that a company can't void a warranty just because of using a 3rd party product, but only if it could be shown that the 3rd party product caused a problem. Again, just repeating something I read...
I totally agree with wreed. I had pretty much no thoughts of getting the E machine until I got SCAL and now am dying to have it. And I am still interested in shape carts. They have some great ones that have come out recently or are coming out soon. Not to mention some of the new accessories they are coming out with like the stamp making supplies, deep cut blade, and battery pack. SCAL should just be incentive for them to step up their game. It doesn't have to be the "enemy."
