number in a star

Newbie here, I am trying to make a simple star with the number for in the middle, but I can not get it to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Are you using the shapes in the scal program? Instead of choosing a font you can select a shape. There is a simple star there and then you should be able to select a font and insert your numbers.
