Help with how font manager works

Lots of people are suggesting the Font Thing to manage fonts. I have it but I don't know what to do with it. Are you able to group fonts and dingbats by types like: animal shapes, holidays, cute, formal, movie title scripts, etc?
If so, how do I do that,
And, does this organize the font in other programs such as SCAL or Word or CDS?

Any help would be appreciated.
