Tiles turned into Coasters

Post by cmmiller99 »

Not my original idea but when I saw on another craft site a person took 4 x 4 inch tile and turned them into drink coasters I had to try it out! I purchased the Monograms off of myvinyldesigner.com and then the other set of coasters I made is from designs I have made for customers just shrunk down to fit on a 4 x 4 inch tile. I was testing different colors to see how each would look and then finished the tile by water sealing them - here is the final product!

They look great! What kind of a water sealer did you use? An acrylic spray? I have done some tiles as coasters and didn't seal them and they have held up so far. I used the outdoor vinyl. I did spray one and it really lost it's sheen. :(

Thanks! I used a water based Minnwax sealant that you brushed on. I used really thin coats and probably 5 or 6 coats total. I used indoor vinyl so wanted to protect it more. Thankfully, this didn't lose the sheen and since the white tiles had dimples in this the Minnwax smoothed everything out but you can still easily see the dimples so I liked that! Not sure if there is something better to use or if you do really need anything at all. :)

you could turn your designs into stencils and paint and seal your designs on your tiles...........

Did you cut a square of felt to put on the backside of the tile to protect and quiet them?

At Ace Hardware I bought a 1/8th inch sheet of cork and cut that down to 4x4 squares to glue on the bottom of the tile. Then I found at Hobby Lobby they already have some pre-cut in squares and circles but it was quite a bit more expensive to do. But, if on sale, or with a 40% off coupon it maybe worth the time and effort and also ensures all of the cuts are the same!
