No, you don't use the carts with SCAL but you can still use your carts as normal or with Design Studio Software.

You do have to have one cartidge in your cricut to be able to cut with
scal. It does not matter which one..

To help sway you, you can cut sooo many fonts that are available on the web and are free! That's what drew me to SCAL. Also, I can cut them much smaller than the smallest setting DS allowed. I don't always want 1 - 1 1/2 inch letters. Even though the carts say you can print 1", they seem to come out much bigger when you consider tails and tall legs of letters.

The other thing I love is being able to use dingbats. There are so many beautiful florishes, trees, vines, other designs that I could never get on a cart. Again, they are free! I just can't see spending $60+ for a cart with maybe one or two designs I actually might like. Most of the carts are too cartoony, or made for kids (I have no kids), and I just don't need that kind of stuff. I take mostly scenery pictures so flourishes and the like work well for me.

If all that isn't enough, you can use all kinds of vector files, and draw your own using third party tools. Inkscape is a tool many here have used to draw things, piece apart drawings or clipart and other images, and the like.

You have to make your own mind up, but I bought it, love it and have never looked back. I haven't used my DS since, I just see no need.

WOW, it does sound incredible!

I too have no kids..but my sisters do and I often like best of both worlds, LOL. This does seem like something up my alley.

Is SCAL user friendly? I am not all that advanced but am into learning it :)

SCAL is probably the easiest program you'll ever use!! I have Design Studio too but since I got SCAL I never use Design Studio - I find Design Studio not so friendly, especially the shadowing. SCAL is so much easier!!! I hardly ever use my carts any more either!! How sad.......that's a ton of money! I do take the carts to crops as the crop 'leader' lets us use her cricut cutter. Everyone brings their carts and we all share although I must say I usually have whatever I need already cut using SCAL!!! It's the best!!
