installation problems - USB driver issue

I have a Cricut expression machine and running on laptop with Windows XP - bought & downloaded SCAL and installed. Opened program - it tells me I don't have the USB driver installed. Followed directions to get it downloaded - unzipped.

The video tutorial on installing the tutorial does not match the screens I have.

When I plug in the CE to the laptop - the computer tells me the hardware is installed and ready for me. I check the hardware device list but the "USB serial converter" is not listed however there is something listed called "USB high speed serial converter" listed but not at the bottom of the list as the video says.

So I go back to SCAL = same error message of USB driver not installed.

I"m on about hour 3 trying to make this work. I need help.

Open your SCAL program, click the Help tab at the top of the screen, then select Install USB drivers from the drop down menu.

Excellent - ok - now we're making progress.

I got the driver installed.

But now I can't get the firm ware updated. Help?

THe only way I've found is the download the DS software but it's trial version download site is down.

Some Cricut machines come with the correct firmware version. What does it show in the window of your Cricut when you turn it on?

Yes - thanks - I've read that - and thus my problem....the mirror site to download DS in order to get update is down. If anyone has the trial version file and would be willing to send it to me - I would greatly appreciate it.

SOmeone sent me a link to a different download site so I'm working on getting DS installed so I can update my firmware so I can play with SCAL!!
