Preview of .svg files.........

Post by sboz »

Todd,

I don't think this could be incorporated into SCAL, but might be an idea for another program:

We REALLY need a .svg 'all image browse' program. Right now, Inkscape has a "individual image browse" but it is very time consuming to find the image you want. PaintShopPro has a great(!) 'all image browse' unfortunately PSP (at least the version I have) does not recognize .svg files.

Wanna make some more money? Design just a program that can give us 'all image browse' for .svg files. I have a program called Renesis which can do this, but Renesis doesn't show the entire image.

I didn't care for the Renesis viewer. BUT I love this one...http://www.irfanview.com/ I can view all my svg files. Even all the ones that are in subfolders all in one place! And I can view the whole image...Now if I could just click on it and it would open up into SCAL that would be great!

As a programmer Todd can make SCAL do anything he wants, I program for Linux and Windows, if he was so inclined he could make it play music, show the current weather, beep annoyingly every 10 minutes, the comment "I don't think SCAL can do ???? needs to be wiped out of your minds, it's just a matter of what is practical and what he can be sweet talked into putting into it.
As far as SVG browsing goes, right now a very easy way is to make a bmp/png/jgp of the svg file with the same name but different extension i.e. jpg then if you view your directory with explorer you see the image right next to the svg.
If you install the Adobe SVG plugin you can then even open the svg files in Internet Explorer by double clicking on them. http://www.adobe.com/svg/viewer/install/

I have been searching the net for over an hour to try to find an app that will do what you want, I found a whole bunch of flops but I did find one awesome program called Konvertor it can convert pretty much any image into any other so it can make a thumbnail or full size image of your svg files, it can even convert them as a batch so you can convert them all at once, it even shows the svg files in a browser like you want but it does not scale them well in the browser I could only see the corner of some, but it converts them to jpg or anything else quite quickly.

Thump2010,

I LOVE the idea of simply creating a matching .jpeg file. Simple, clean, something I am used to using. I know I will be busy tonight creating .jpeg files!

So does this mean that Todd can find a way for SCAL to open files for the WB and all those other cutters??

The problem is he has to be able to know what format those files are laid out in, the other companies probably don't freely give out that info, anything CAN be done, IF you have the knowledge and when they won't cough up how something is written to a file it is very very difficult to figure it out.
I doubt very highly that PC will tell him how their save files are laid out for him to use, and that would take away from their business. (at least in their eyes)
Can things be figured out? yes, you can spend hours/days/months figuring it all out and as soon as you implement it the other company changes the format and you are back at square one.
So things like opening other companies files for use can cause problems, lol look at Microsoft and the .doc file format, they still won't publish the way it is laid out because they want to keep the ability to change it on a whim and they used to play heck with any software company that made software that read a .doc file because how else could they do it but by stealing their technology blah blah blah.
So in short, yes, would it be feasible to him in the long run probably not. could open a can of worms he may never be able to close.

I'd be happy with being able to see the .svg file BEFORE I downloaded it.

Perhaps the poster should provide a pic with the post, that would do it for me.
