make letters front and back in a word?

Ok I know it can be done but I'm not sure exactly how. I want to make a word and alternate the letters one letter up front and the next letter in back and then weld them. Is there a video or picture tut?

If you are doing this in Inkscape then type your word.. Ungroup it and then click on the letter you want at the top or the bottom and then click on oject/lower to bottom.. or object/raise to the top..
