Inkscape Word Book for SCAL

Post by doodlebugs »

I am so new to this not only to SCAl but to Inkscape as well. I found an awsome TUTORIAL on how to do this but when I try two sepate things it still does not work.
The first thing I am trying is that in the video when joining the rectangle to the letter after you align the box with the letter, tou are supposed to go to path Union. In the Tutorial, when this is done the letter turns to be the same clar color as the box and you can tell it is welded togther. When I try it it does not change now sometimes when they are both selected it looks like they are united but if you click and move the letter, it is not. What the heck am I doing wrong?

The next issue is in the Tutorial he shows how to make the center of the letter D as one so that the hole does not cause issues. When I try it with the letter A Nothing happens I am going crazy/ Thanks in advance for the help

BTW I hope this is posted in the right place I was not sure I was alowed to share the place where I say this so I will if needed

If you are doing this right in inkscape set the viewing image to outline mode .. Make sure you letter and the rectangle are overlapping a bit and then go path/union... I find using the outline mode the easiest when joining stuff...

To select the center hold you shift key down and click on the center and then click on the out part of the D.. if path/difference doesn't work I normally would go path/combine...

It's not working because he is using Inkscape 0.46 or older and you are probably using Inkscape 0.47. Ink47 puts text into a Group when you use Path/Object to path and you can't use most of the Path operations on a Group. You actually don't need to convert it to Path if you are typing one letter at a time. You also don't need to break apart the letters and then use Path/Difference with Ink46 or Ink47.

If you are typing the letters one at a time, just size and position them, then select the letter and the rectangle and use Path/Union.

If you are typing all of the letters at once with Ink47, select the letters, Path/Object to path, right click on the text and select Ungroup. Each letter should then be a Path by itself. Just position it where you want it, select both the letter and the rectangle, and Path/Union.

Heather you are so much better than I am at trying to describe what to do..LOL..
Never even thought to ask if she was using Inkscape .47 which is what i have..
Also with the new SCAL2 you shouldn't even have to do this in inkscape as it can be done right in SCAL2..

Okay more issues, thanks to HeatherbI was finally able to complete my first wordbook well sort of...Now that all the letters are set I copied each and saved it in inkscape to a page for each letter. When I go to SCAL and import SVG all the letters open except one the A in Dance does not come through what could I be doing wrong?
