I can't ungroup an image..

Post by Scrapper007 »

I downloaded Inkscape today and used it for the first time (not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be to learn)! Anyway, I had purchased an image online and converted it to an SVG file, no problem. Opened it up in SCAL, no problem. Problem is I can't ungroup the elements in order to cut out different parts in different colors. Sorry to be dumb, but are some images just "ungroupable" or am I doing something wrong??

Since you created the file with Inkscape, I would break it apart in that program.

Here's a utube video on how to do this in inkscape:

I think Heather has some tutorials on her blog about using Inkscape for this.

Another idea is to use the trace feature in SCAL2 version 2.06 or higher which will allow you to ungroup them with the SCAL software instead of inkscape.

Thank you Deloris. I couldn't quite grasp what she was doing on the video..so I started playing around in SCAL and after importing the file there, clicked above on "object" and then "break apart" and that worked. Problem is though that the main piece is actually 3 different colors. It's an owl and I was able to break apart the eyes, beak, feet, etc. but the main "outline" of the owl is all one piece and the printed image (the .jpg) shows three different colors in the main piece (the one that won't break apart) Hope that makes sense?
