How do I start a letter/an image toward middle of mat?
When importing an SVG, how do I get it to "land" toward the middle of the mat so that I can see the arrows to move it around (on the mat)? When I type text or put an image on the mat, it starts at the very top where I can only see the lower half of the image or letter so that I can't move it around.. TIA!

Unfortunately, the current versions always put the svg artwork in the very corner. An easy way to move it is to use the alignment buttons in the Position Size window.
If you are using a font, you can click on the text tool, then place the cursor where you want the text/dingbat. HTH

You could view it in "fit window". This is what I always do so I can see the whole mat.
