Karen Whimsey Silhouetttes - question

Post by kelsie94 »

Does anyone know if you can take a "copy" of a silhouette and put it in SCAL to cut? Does it have to get pasted into Inkscape first? The silhouettes from Karen's site can be 'copied' (doesn't appear that they can be 'downloaded'). Thanks.

I'm not familiar with Karen Whimsey Silhouettes. Can you save the image as a jpeg? If so, you can import it into Inkscape, trace it, save it as an .svg and from there import it into SCAL.

I've wondered how to work with Karen's silhouettes too. You do right click on them, then save image as. The image can be saved as a .jpg (the default). I haven't used Inkscape yet. However, it sounds like you open it in Inkscape, trace it, then save it as a .svg file as Laurieinaz said.

Thanks. I can't put Inkscape on my computer though....... slows it down way too much  Guess I just get to admire those silhouettes instead of cutting them out!

Inkscape should not slow down your computer. You might try downloading it again. Make sure all of your applications are closed. When you download it and install it, it will ask you whether you want it to uninstall the existing one - answer yes. After it uninstalls, the directory where the first Inkscape lived will still be there and you will need to delete it before continuing with the installation (you can leave the installation window open while you delete the directory). Then try running Inkscape again. If it still seems slow, reboot your computer and try again. Hope that helps!

I read last night that someone said you only needed to import into inkscape then save it as an svg. I don't think they said you needed to trace it. But since mine didn't work, I supposed I need to trace it. I don't know how to trace - the Inkscape tracing tutorial didn't match the new version's prompts, and I didn't really understand how to do it. I won't give up but it looks hard to do to me right now.

these have to be right clicked, saved as jpeg and then traced in Inkscape.
To trace the image : select the image Path>Trace bitmap, change threshold brightness to 0,650 then click on update, close the trace window; on the page move the traced image to one side, delete the original image, go to View>Display Mode>Outline and the save as .svg.
Then open SCAL File >Import .svg , resize the image and cut.
Quite honestly there are loads of free silhouette dingbats about which can be opened in SCAL and cut directly without any tracing.
