I also upgraded from a Create to an Expression only because I have SCAL and can make my own designs. I wouldn't even own a Cricut if I didn't have SCAL. I am trying to figure out what the big deal is with the Gypsy. I guess I don't see the benefit of this. What makes it so desirable? Maybe, since I don't use cartridges, I don't see the benefit.

I purchased my Cricut Expression specifically because SCAL was available to use with it. I would NOT have purchased it otherwise.

Just something I thought I'd pass on...I do not own a Gypsy...but I do know that you can only "load" each cartridge into a gypsy ONE time. Once the cartridge is loaded into the gypsy it cannot be loaded into another gypsy. That said, if you do not have a gypsy and loan out your cartridges to someone who is not honest, and they load your cartridge onto their gypsy, the cartridge will be rendered usless to you if you ever buy a gypsy. It will, however, still work in your cricut machine.

Jasen, could you please tell me where you buy cartridges for less than $30.

Thanks

I know this is an old post but i have been looking on ebay this last week for an expression and have noticed how many carts have been put on and they even mention that they have the gypsy so no longer need the cart!!! wonder if they will see a drop in sales due to people buying pre owned rather than new :)

The carts in the uk can be silly prices and i would have sold my create months ago if it was not for scal :D
HP laptop running vista, scal 2.011 , service pack 2, 3gb ram and a cricut expression

I don't see how a cart can be rendered useless by putting it into the Gypsy. Somehow the Gypsy would have to write something on the cart and that would be some very expensive technology for such a machine. IMHO

My hubby said the same thing, so my friend and I tested it. Sure enough when we tried to put the cartridge in the second Gypsy it said the cartridge had already been loaded onto Gypsy # (it gave the serial number)

So what happens if after 10 days, you have a bad Gypsy and you have to get a new one from the company? Do you think they will send you a new one with all your card information already installed. I'm sure somebody will figure out a way to erase the information off of the carts soon. Probably as simple as putting the Cart in your Cricut and running around the table 3 times chanting "I love SCAL, I love SCAL"

I visited many sites that state yes that the Gypsy once the carts are installed on the machine it renders them inactive to all but your current Cricut products. I know this sounds far fetched and am waiting on more data, although some of the sites link to sites that sell the gypsy. I do however know that is is possible. I have a Berninia Artista 180 which was bought in 2000 and even at that time the software works on what they call a dongle interface that once installed give you a dongle number that can only be used once. It downloads to your dongle (one inch square interace that plugs into your machine) and if your computer goes belly up and you need to reinstall your software you have to call and get another dongle number. Like I say the jury is stilll out on this but before I buy for Provo Craft again they will have to answer lots of questions.

One thing to remember this Gypsy is 300. dollars and you can buy a 10 inch note book for 199. and up. and a little research to make sure it has enough ram/memory etc and you can have a real nice thing that Scal and Inkscape both will work with a larger screen. Oh well I'm goingt looking again to try to prove PC is not out there messing around again.

Before I go you might look at all the fuss that PC is having about their battery and some of not accepting some of the older carts like george. They have lots of fussing on Cricut.com

I'm so glad I didn't waste good hard earned money on one of those Gypsys... I always wait to see if all bugs have been ironed out of pricey products before purchasing..
