Inkscape questions

Post by DallaR »

OK let me tell you what happen to me and then maybe someone can tell me what do to. Yesterday I purchased SCAL for the first time I have known abt if for awhile but didnt have the money to buy it yet. And I am sorry to say but I just got a deposit on a Yorkie puppy I have for sell I breed them and thats how I was able to purchase one.

Some time ago I had heard about SCAL and downloaded the trial and used it only 1 time I also had downloaded inkscape the same day because I wanted to see if the two programs together would do what I needed them to do and they did other than the fact that since SCAL wasnt registered it cut these HUGE lines in my paper. And thats been abt a year ago but I just didnt have the money to purchase it expecially since my bf's son had came back to live with us and every time I turned around he needed money and I was always broke.

Anyway I purchased the new SCAL 2.0 yesterday and I opened it up and every time I put my serial number in I got a error message I am not about to tell you how many times I actually did that before I relized that the version I download awhile back was SCAL the 1.0 version and I just purchased the 2.0 version and it wasnt working. So as soon as I figured that out I deleted the version I had one my computer and downloaded the new version on the first try it worked.

What I was trying to do what take the image of a tractor just a simple tractor unto inskscape and convert it so that SCAL could cut out the tractor so I foung severl pages of tuturiorals and after going thre the tuturioral a couple of times I noticed that that the pages the tutrioral was showing didnt look at all like my inkscape sure it did to a point but some things were different like the tut. was using a font that my inkscape didnt have and then on the tut. it said just type the letter one by one but when I would try to type a letter NOTHING happened no letter came up. So I got too smart for my own good and I said I download inkscape the same day I origally download SCAL and maybe it has a new verison too so without thinking I went in and deleted inkscape from my computer. No I am not a blonde even though this one event doesnt prove it. Anyway I went back to inkscape website and tried on 3 different occassions to download inkscape and cannot. I thought Oh now it iwill not work on Vista. Duh it was on vista that it was working which is where I deleted it from I dont know what happen last night but I am hoping this morning that I will be able to go in and get this program I have my fingers crossed anyway. Please remember I am brand new but if you guys offer to teach me a few things I agree to learn them and I will be as helpful to other newbies that need help

I think I need to go back to inkscape website and read it and just stop trying to download the first one I see that said download for all I know I am trying to download a program for a Mac but I would love to see a tuturial that gives some info on inkscape where it will say if you dont have it and your running vista go to .......... website and download version.... ..... that would be very helpful for someone like me.

Thanks in advance

OH and BTW I stil have 1 more female Yorkie left...

There is a green arrow near the upper right corner of http://www.inkscape.org. Click on that and it will automatically give you the right version for your OS.

Inkscape doesn't have any fonts of its own, it uses the fonts installed on your computer.
There is Capital A on the left side of the Inkscape window that you need to select, then click on the working part of the window to type. I have a tut on my blog that shows what the tool icons look like. http://imagesbyheatherm.wordpress.com/2 ... bat-fonts/ I also have a tab at the top of my blog with all of my Inkscape tuts listed.

Thank you so much for your information I think that I would really be better off it I could just sit down and learn what every icon and how to actually use each of these programs and then ask questions.

If anyone has blogs that have good how to instructions where they show pictures on using Inkscape and SCAL as well as as this new Paint Net program I just downloaded I think I would actually get to cut something out. When I first download these programs I took the time to learn the basics before I purchased them but now I cannot even remember the basices but I do remember finding a jpg picture and opening it in inkscape and coverting it to a SCG file and cutting it with huge lines threw it but when I tried that yesterday the picture was in color and I really didnt want it be in color because I am going to cut it out in a solid color vinyl but I couldnt figure out even how to take the color out I did remember to trace it but my problems were something abt it wasnt a bitmat and I didnt remember where to go to change it to a bitmat so I could trace it seperate and then save it so now I am going to spend some time reading forums and then some time trying to teach myself how to use inkscape and scal and then I will try to get better at it so I can make it do all the things I want it to do. Thanks for your help. Lets cross my fingers that I can even download the inkscape program today.

I have written tutorials with pictures on my blog for both Inkscape and SCAL2, there are tabs near the top of the main page. The online manuals for both programs are also excellent sources for more information.

Images don't need to be .bmp for tracing. Any non-vector image is a bitmap, this included BMP, JPG, PNG, GIF, and others.

You can trace an image that isn't black and white in Inkscape as long as there is some contrast between the image and the background. If you only want a silhouette, you can probably make a trace in Inkscape by increasing the Brightness cutoff threshold, though it's hard to say for sure without seeing the image. See my post here for more on tracing images that aren't black and white using Inkscape. HTH

What internet browser are you using? Does it automatically save downloads to a default location? Check the settings on your browser program and make sure it is prompting you for a download location.
I sent you a PM about your other post.

I really should not say anything about this until its done but I was able I think to get that program downloaded, seems I had part of it done and when I was reading the error it said something about it needing a space of its own to be installed into. So I deleted everything that was in the program file under that name and it looks like it is installing now It says Installation Complete so now I am looking for something to teach me to use them.. Thanks everyone
