ok, i got it right this time, with the white square, but I am still unsure as to the purpose of it--I have been googling inkscape, dynamic offset, etc--Are there any blogs, etc that have a good tutprial on this?
Was the paint bucket the wrong way to go about this?

No, you didn't do it wrong. It's just that the paint bucket's biggest drawback is that it has some error (the book). Also, the hair can done by removing parts of the lines using either a shape tool, or the bezier tool before you use Path/Break apart (see Dan99's videos for more on removing parts http://dan99.blogspot.com/2008/12/video ... f-svg.html and http://dan99.blogspot.com/2008/11/video ... tools.html)

I learned to create paper piecings from Susan Blue Robot http://susanbluerobot.blogspot.com/2008 ... inish.html I do things a little different now, but it's a good place to start.

Thanks so much Heather-
I really appreciate you taking the time to explain some of this to me
I will check out those sites when I get done teaching tomorrow, hopefully (although I really wanna do it tonight, but I know I'll never go to sleep otherwise)
BTW-great Etsy site

Jeannette,
If you have a pdf to start with, it might already be a vector and you wouldn't have to trace or use the paint bucket, just group the same colored pieces together. There is a great tutorial on working with pdfs on Heather's blog.

Kay-thanks so much! I have been to your bog before & I'll check Heather's out as well. Sometimes it's can get so confusing, so I really appreciate the tups & suggestion syo uprovide. I really do want to learn how to convert stuff into SVG---does anyone use Illustrator? (i have a free trial right now)
Do you like Illustrator or Inkscape better?
(i know Inkscape is free, but I do get educator pricing for Adobe products)-and inkscape doesn't ever seem to work properly on my Mac (i have older PowerBook Mac, no "PC capability" like the nwere Macs have) (I have been using Inkscape on a PC, and it does run fine there) but illustrator operates well with my Mac
:D
