How to trace Chipboard Cutouts

I have been asked to trace a few chipboard cutouts for some people in the past and I usually don't use trace function in Inkscape. I just can't get a reasonable result with it. I am just fussy . I generally use the bezier tool and draw around a scanned image of the chipboard cutout the adjust the nodes to get the curves correct.

That is OK if you are used to using vector programs and playing with nodes. Many people are not. So I have put a little tutorial together using the paint bucket method to produce a vector file but you will need access to a scanner or a friend with one.

Also find attached some chipboard cutouts I have converted. The crown does need resizing though.

The tutorial is very nicely done. Clear and simple.

When you use trace bitmap do you ever use "edge detection"? I find this works although sometimes you get the dreaded double line.

I have a scanner and do use the same technique but sometimes I just take a photo of the chipboad cutout on a contrasting background and then take the jpg into Ink.

Hi Sue

I think you have hit the nail on the head. I have not been using a dark enough contrasting background colour when using Inkscapes trace function. I tend to just place the cutout on the scanner without any backing.
It is also a good tip if people are going to use a camera to use a contrasting background also.
