What about cutting out vinyl & using it like you would for glass etching except use Alchol ink???? It's for nonpourous surfaces & if you've sealed it, maybe it becomes non pourous??? I would think using the right colors could get the "woodburned look". Just a thought.

Picking up on the vinyl stencil idea...Or maybe you could use a dark wood stain or (stampers help me out here) walnut ink that is dark and permanent. Just do a little experimenting and see.
Or how about cutting a heat resistant stencil and using it to guide an actual woodburning tool. There is a special kind of quilters template plastic that is heat resistant so you can iron it (not sure how much hotter you have to get to burn wood). I like to use magnet sheets for a lot of things. It cuts well with a Cricut (would just put some adhesive on the back, since you'll want adhesive on the stencil anyway) I think it would take than kind of heat.
you will definitely need to do some experimenting, but it sounds like an opportunity to develop a new technique. Let us know how it goes.

If you haven't found something that works already . . . I do a lot of signs that I paint and the primitive ones that I want to look kind of wood burned I use dark brown eyeshadow and the sponge tip to go over my letters. It stays on very well and can be lightly done or darkened to the shade you like best. I do the letters in dark brown paint then after they are completely dry I go over them with the eyeshadow until I get the look I like.
