True Size Template

Post by firstcut »

Thanks to Bob (mid-Illini.com) for this idea. I have made it into a template. Basically if you start all your Inkscape documents with this, design to scale, and import at 12 inches, you will never have to worry about matching proportions again. Hope you find this as helpful as I have.
Kay

To have this show up in your template menu in Inkscape you have to put it in the proper folder
Windows: Program Files/Inkscape/Share/Templates
Mac:go to the Finder, Choose "Go to Folder" from the go menu and type /Applications/Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/templates

A copy of the following instructions
is included in the file and under File>Document Metadata>Description.
to use this file:
Create your design and scale it to the size you would like for it to cut.
You may add more layers, but be sure that you leave the original layer visible.
Save as usual and import into SCAL with default size set to 12 inches.
Your design will keep its size and be in the proper proportion to other
files created with this template.

I have been doing this manually the last few files I have designed - THANK YOU for the template! It will make it much easier.

Talan,
Are you opening it in Inkscape? It is an Inkscape template, and will not work in Illustrator for some reason, even though it is technically an svg. Sorry about the crash.

I have put a post on my blog about the template including screen shots that show how it works.

Hi Kay

I thought I knew how you did it but it appears to be smoke and mirrors :)
I thought you might have the little triangles in the corners like the video but with no line colour.
I was wrong :)

So how did you do it?

Cheers

Craig

LOL, no smoke and mirrors. The little placeholders are there in Inkscape, like the triangles in the video. Only difference is I made them small enough that they fall out of the cuttable area when imported into SCAL so that they become invisible in preview there, and they don't cut, as long as you place at 0,0 or thereabouts.

Thank you so much for doing this. I have a Mac also and I know there was a tut(from Dan99 I think) about creating 12x12template, but for the life of me I couldn't figures out how to find where my templates were on the Mac. Now I've got a great template and I know more about my computer!!! THANKS!
