My husband had decided that it would be benificial if I were to get a laptop of some sort to use with SCAL/DS. I was hoping that someone could tell me if those small size laptop computers that I see out there for $300 would work. It would be just for crafting no emailing or bookkeeping. We were walking thru Target last night and seen two small computers that when closed are the size of a hardback book - they were $329. Are those smart enough to run SCAL/DS?
Is there a difference between computers called Notebooks and others called just Laptops?
Any advise would be helpful, as it is just for crafting and I don't want to spend a lot of extra $ if I don't have to.
thanks,
Seajay
Notebook/Laptop questions
Re: Notebook/Laptop questions
My granddaughter got one for Christmas and I found that I had a hard time reading the tiny text. I'm over 60, so part of that might be my need for bifocals! I had to scroll horizontally on each page too which I didn't like. Most of them don't have a cd drive so that is something else to consider. After 20 minutes of using one, I decide I didn't like it.

Re: Notebook/Laptop questions
Notebooks don't run programs like word and stuff. They are for mainly surfing the internet only. My husband and I have bought 3 laptops in the last 2 months. Long story! But we bought 1 Compaq that ended up being like $400 after taxes (NY Taxes!). Then we bought an Acer for my sister that was about the same price. (the third was my mac and that was for the sole purpose of me just wanting one).
Best Buy has an outlet shop online now, I would check there. The guys at the store told us something like Celeron processors were not good enough to run video stuff--but ours is just fine! The price you pay for a Pentium is just outrageous now-a-days.
HTH. I know how frustrating it is to have to go somewhere and not know the difference
Plus, I don't really think the people at Best Buy are helpful

Re: Notebook/Laptop questions
That is incorrect.
Netbooks/mini laptops CAN run programs exactly like any other laptop. Now you have to see what you are buying. A mini laptop with 6 or 8 gb hard drive might not be able to handle it. But one with 120gb will run everything. I am using my mini laptop now and I do everything on it including Microsoft Office. I love that I can carry it anywhere with me.
This will work fine: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/Describe ... d=10859062
$299 at Walmart.
Now screen size could be an issue...but running the program wouldn't be. Also, keep in mind these don't have a cd-rom drive. This isn't an issue for me because I have other computers plus most everything is available in download format these days.
Sorry for the long post...

I am just going to "yeah that" this post. I run Paint Shop Pro as well as all Word programs on my Acer One.Desiree wrote:That is incorrect.

Re: Notebook/Laptop questions
My mistake, I was told by the people at Target and Best Buy here that notebooks were for mainly BROWSING the internet. While doing our research, we also came to the same conclusion that a notebook would not do what we needed it to and for about the same price we could buy a Celeron processor laptop (versus a Pentium) with a bigger screen and bigger hard drive. Again though, this is just here where we live and I don't know the rest of the country--however this makes another reason why we now do all of our research online instead of listening to the Geek Squad or the high school students working at Target...
