Help with Fonts Please

Post by frogge »

I was wondering where you save your downloadable fonts? Do most people make a folder? Can you access your fonts in a folder using the SCAL program? I am very new to this program and want to know how it works, any help/advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

Just install them into your normal windows font folder and they will show up in SCAL.

Good luck and have fun.

Some people use font managers. See Fonts -> Font Managers for recommendations.

Here are two video tutorials for installing fonts.

Hopefully you have one of the two systems! Hope this helps!

I'm a Vista user. I file all my fonts in a folder on a separate hard drive and then use a Font Manager to control the installation of them. If you "install" too many fonts in your Windows/Font folder, you will notice that not all of them will show up in programs, as only so many will load (SCAL being one of the programs that will do this, in my observations). Additionally, installing too many fonts will greatly impact the performance of the programs they are used in, this is all successfully avoided with the use of the additional drive or folder and font manager. In order to use the fonts, they need to be installed, so you can't use a font that is not stored in the Windows/Font folder; a font manager will take care of this installation for you.

I, personally, recommend "The Font Thing" as it's freeware and it works perfectly. One detail, you do need to run a font manager as a Administrator in Vista to successfully install fonts from the GUI.

Unfortunately I have windows XP but I watched the tutorials. I saved my fonts in the windows font folder but when I open SCAL they don't show up under the fonts. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Did you actually "install" them or just download them there? You will have to: Open the font file and click FILE, INSTALL NEW FONT, then choose the new fonts. I use a font manager because I have so many fonts. Installing a lot of fonts on your computer will eventually slow it down (you have to put quite a few for this to happen) - with the font manager they are not actually "installed". With SCAL we collect more and more and more.....LOL!!
